I got a catalog in the mail yesterday, for Serena and Lily. Maybe I’m behind, but I’d never heard of this bedding and furniture company before, and immediately thought of the other Serena and Lily in my life: the Van der Woodsens.
As upscale as the brand hopes to be, six-year-old Serena’s walls were more likely decked with Warhols and disco balls than pastels. Even the Caravan Gypsy Tote Collection is to vanilla for Lily’s groupie days. But this has me thinking, wouldn’t a mother-daughter Van der Woodsen collection be a realistic plot line…and something for Lily to do while she’s under house arrest? It’s coming, I just know it.

Just when I’d started blogging more regularly again, I broke my nose, chipped a tooth and discovered I have scary high blood pressure — as a result, I slipped deep into a wave of icing my face and acquainting myself with Houston’s health care community. But I’m back. While I update my post to-do list, snazz-up the About page, and work on new features, here’s some fun news from the fashion world. We all need it, whether or not your BP is as high as mine.
- Karl’s kicking off Cannes’ month of red carpets with his Cruise Collection show. Click through Popsugar’s slideshow for pretty pictures from the South of France, the perfect backdrop for some really awkward snapshots of Blake Lively, Rachel Bilson, Vanessa Paradis and Clemence Poesy. Who was this photog?
- Not only is Taylor Momsen not returning to Gossip Girl, Jessica Szohr’s out, too. Which is just as well, because she’s been a filler character for some time now, and a poor excuse for a plot catalyst the past several episodes. She needs a spin-off, not a recurring role on the UES. Although how much of the Ed Westwick break-up do you think we can attribute to Vanessa’s demise?
- Speaking of Jessica Szohr, I still can’t get over girlfriend’s hot mess at the Met Gala last week. Perhaps she’d already gotten her pink slip.

My boyfriend and I have been to so many weddings this year — and still have 4 more to attend later this year — that his friend nicknamed him 27 Dresses. Because “my” weddings span this entire year, I’ve felt like I’ve devoted all of 2011 to booking plane tickets and hotels, buying gifts, and wishing I had money left over for a new dress for each one! So I’m dumping some of my wedding preoccupation here, in honor of Bridal Fashion Week, which kicked off yesterday in New York with Oscar de la Renta (already up on his site).
Fabsugar has a slideshow of Marchesa’s 2011 collection, and its sister site TrèsSugar recapped the history of wedding dress styles and traditions, from the story behind “something blue” to 1940s military-inspired dresses.
With a subscription, you can also keep up with WWD’s coverage of Bridal Fashion Week, here.
And there’s still the question, what will Kate wear?
Houston boutique Muse is already in the leprechaun spirit, and is helping customers avoid getting pinched on St. Patrick’s Day, which is this Thursday, March 17.
Starting yesterday and through Thursday, you’ll get 17% off any green purchase in the store, including accessories (and that’s the color — you’d have a hard time arguing for a discount on organic or eco-friendly items).
Muse Boutique is located at The Centre at River Oaks, 2411 West Alabama (at Kirby). Phone: 713.520.6873.
Aha! After previewing the new WhoWhatWear book for you guys a couple of weeks ago — and not having any info. about release dates or pricing — the book is finally out, as are details about grabbing a copy of your own. The book is officially retailing for $18.95 but is on sale now at Amazon.com for $12.89. I mentioned before that readers will get clues for picking out outfits for different occasions — there are 50 event and wardrobe ideas in all.
The WhoWhatWear girls are also going on a limited book tour in Newport Beach, New York and Chicago.
"Big Hair Big Nails"
Next Friday I’m going to be a bridesmaid in my cousin Kathleen’s wedding on Long Island, and I’ve been stressing about how to do my nails. We’re getting them done together, but I can’t decide if I want something poppy, like fuschia, something edgy in a dark metallic color, or even something more subdued but still noticeable, like a pastel, patent-y pink.
While doing research online last night, I came across OPI’s new Texas-themed collection of nail polishes. Since I’m from Houston, went to college in San Antonio, and have lots of family and friends from Texas, I got a little excited, in spite of myself.
There’s a teal Austin Tatious, I Want to Be a Lone Star (a tribute to the big Texas sky), an espresso Suzi Loves Cowboys, a bright tangerine Y’all Come Back You Hear?, a grapey magenta Houston, We Have Purple, fuschia Do You Think I’m Texy?, emerald Don’t Mess With OPI, a slick silver It’s Totally Fort Worth It, sandy San Tan-Tonio, neon pink Guy Meets Galveston, and two other bold colors.
If only there were a pretty bluebonnet shade for spring! But I’m thinking about snagging a color or two to stow away in my suitcase for New York.
You’ve still got a day to enter the Bonanza Handbag Sweepstakes, over at Bags Bonanza’s Bag Blog (is that enough Bs for you?)
They’re giving away a sateen Coach handbag here by commenting on the post, answering the question “Who is the most stylish celebrity and why?” More rules here. I recommend entering: even if you’re still in the middle of coat weather, the preppy mint green color will get you ready for spring!
